This painting depicts the sunlit exterior of a typical London café. But it also has a darker side. Behind the windows of the café there are two 'photographic' images. On the left, a group of boys stand in the shadow of the Grenfell Tower as it burns to a cinder. Meanwhile on the right, a woman and her daughter shop in Sloane Square one of London's most exclusive retail venues. Both scenes took place in the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea - Britain's wealthiest borough. I live close to Grenfell, and I have experienced first-hand the effects of UK Government policies which have led to a widening of the gap between rich and poor. So I created this painting as a response to what I perceive to be Britain's descent into national chaos. In other words Brexit is the gift that keeps on giving to this particular artist.
