For this oil painting I took inspiration from a medieval allegory about ageing and death. The original tale was based on a confrontation between three young men and Death. I substituted women at three stages of their lives. Two of them gaze upon a young woman who is oblivious to their presence, engaged as she is with her phone. I have employed the use of ambiguity since the central figure may in fact be looking at a picture. So I am asking the viewer the question, what is real and what is abstraction? Yet of course the answer is that everything about this work is an abstraction.
