This oil painting is based on a visit I made to the British Museum, where I was struck by the public's response to an exhibit known as 'The Barnack Burial'. The young woman ponders on the nature of mortality. While painting this picture I was struck by a moment of serendipity, because on the day following my visit to the museum I happened to read Shelley's 'Ozymandias'. Shelley took his inspiration from the news that a statue of Ramesses II had been discovered in Egypt and was on its way to London where it would be housed in the British Museum. And so I painted this picture of a man who died more than 4000 years ago together with a young woman, while in the distance, submerged in the sand, is the figure of a gargantuan head, although in truth it is a very small African carving which I happened to have in my studio.
