I took inspiration for this painting when, on a wet and dark winter morning, I found myself at Piccadilly Circus in the West End of London. Fields of saturated colour, produced by arrays of LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes), spread across the pavements. I subsequently learned that the ‘Piccadilly Lights’ incorporates recognition technology. By using a pair of cameras mounted below the screen, software can determine the age and gender of visitors. It can discern the make and model of a passing car, and hence deliver content based on estimates of wealth. In addition, the public can connect to the screen’s Wi-Fi and interact with the brands via social media. As a result, advertisers are able to project and promote their products ‘on the fly’. I have mixed feeling about this. The owners of the site claim the harvested data is not preserved beyond a period of microseconds. But how long, I wonder, before this stance changes?
