I made this oil painting in response to the 'Piccadilly Lights' LED display in London. It combines two distinct styles of painting. The central panel is impressionistic in its rendering of reflected light from wet paving stones, and the shadow of a man pulling a suitcase. The rest of the picture is painted with mostly 'flat' areas of colour. I am interested in the psychology of colour, and how it is used to entice the public into buying goods and services. I am also fascinated by the physics underpinning LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes). Current estimates predict that the output of these devices will increase exponentially, while the cost of production will decrease. As a result, cities will become brighter and brighter. But, I wonder, at what psychological cost to the inhabitants? Will they live in never-ending daylight, and lose the ability to see the night sky? Will there be any respite from advertising? Or will all public spaces provide endless arenas?
