This painting is based on a visit I made to Piccadilly Circus. Fields of saturated colour, produced by the 'Piccadilly Lights' and its arrays of LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes), spread across the wet pavements.
I subsequently took an interest in the technology that is incorporated into the screen and learned about recognition technology, which can determine the age and gender of visitors. It can also discern the make and model of a passing car. Weather sensors can dictate the range of products on offer. In addition, the public can connect to the screen’s Wi-Fi and interact with the brands via social media. So, this technology allows advertisers to project and promote their products ‘on the fly’, while consumers are drawn like moths to a flame.
