This is one of three oil paintings I created as a response to major historical events which have taken place during my lifetime. Each event occurred in the United States, a country that I have travelled across extensively. In this painting a young woman is dressed in the 'Stars and Stripes'. I observed her during the 2012 Olympic Games which were held in London. I co-opted her image such that she views a picture depicting a fire-fighter working in the ruins of the World Trade Center (photo is in the public domain). Interspersed with this image is a graphical representation of American culture. As such it has echoes of both Pop-Art and photo-realism, while elsewhere I have employed a typically painterly approach to my subject matter.
